Swim with tropical fish, kayak through mangrove jungles or explore Mayan ruins in Riviera Maya
There’s plenty of room to unwind and reconnect with your best self along the 74 miles of Mexico’s Caribbean coastline known as the Riviera Maya, one of the most sought-after vacation spots in the Western Hemisphere. With its gems of beach resorts, authentic shopping and dining experiences, and nightlife that runs the gamut from sizzling dance floors to intimate clubs, this area, a short drive from the Cancun International Airport, positively dazzles with choices.
Your Adventure Awaits
Here are three ways to spend your days as you explore outside the beach destinations on the Riviera Maya:
Drift through crystalline waters in underground pools. Cenotes, where visitors can snorkel among freshwater fish, or scuba along the paths of underground rivers, are unique to the Yucatan. The Mayans believed they were sacred places, and it takes little imagination to see why. Casa Cenote and Cenote Dos Ojos are two of many in the Tulum area.
Discover the ancient trading routes of the Mayans – by kayak. Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve provides eco adventures that are truly unique. Nowhere else in the world could you paddle through mangrove channels and lagoons on what is thought to be an ancient trading route between the important Mayan cities of Tulum and Muyil.
Channel your inner Indiana Jones (or Ellie Sattler). For one of the most magical experiences of Mayan ruins, visit Coba, about 75 minutes by car from Playa Del Carmen. Coba’s archeological wonders have been reclaimed from the jungle, and the best way of getting around the site is by bike (available for rent there) or tricycle taxi.
If you’re hankering for a trip that’s an easy flight from any of the major cities of North America, check out the Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The only decision you need to make is which activity to do on which day.
